I’m Samorn Selim.

I’m a lawyer turned career coach on a mission for us to take our careers from dread to joy. As the daughter of poor Lao refugees, I was told to pay my dues.

After coaching over 1,000 clients, I now realize that the idea that you have to pay your dues and work in a toxic place is a myth.

We can face our challenges head on, do work we are passionate about, and work with good people with kind hearts to make a big impact. So even as we struggle, we can find a sense of belonging.

Are your parents refugees, and you struggled with generational trauma and the unwritten rules of Corporate America? In this episode with Sam Lam, Senior Legal Counsel at Skybound (the company behind The Walking Dead, Invincible, and other IPs), we discuss:

- How our parents’ generational trauma impacts our life by making us people pleasers, in survival mode catastrophizing everything, and ignoring our needs and desires.

- What it feels like to be parentification children where we play parental roles for our refugee parents, and how that informs our view of the world.

- The importance of normalizing therapy in Asian American communities, especially for those who come from generations of trauma, including war and genocide.

- How to think strategically about going to law school, including post-graduate job opportunities and limiting student loans.

- How to make career pivots from engineering to Big Law to in-house.

- Why it’s important to reevaluate our dreams and leave our dream job for something even better.

- What you can do to overcome imposter syndrome, and use it to your advantage.
